Mathias Braschler was born the 31st of October 1969 in Aarau, Switzerland. He grew up in rural Switzerland, before he moved in 1992 to Zurich. He studied geography and modern history at the university of Zurich for two years, before he started to work as a freelance photographer for different Swiss magazines and newspapers in 1994. In 1998 Braschler went for eight months to New York to realize his book-project "Madison-Avenue". The same year he was nominated for the Materclass of the World Press Foundation in Amsterdam. In October 1999 he moved to New York. Today he is working for numerous prestigious magazines, including the New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, New York Magazine, Stem, El Pais Semanal and the Independent Magazine. Besides his editorial work he continues to do his own projects, like the series about balet schools in Havana and taxi drivers in New York. He is represented by the New York based photo agency Matrix.
